Aziz Mahmud Hudayi (1541–1628) was a prominent figure in the Ottoman Empire, known for his multifaceted roles as a Sufi saint, poet, composer, author, statesman, and Islamic scholar adhering to the Hanafi Maturidi school.
Born in Şereflikoçhisar, Central Anatolia, of Hashemite descent, Aziz Mahmud Hudayi pursued his education in Istanbul, completing his studies in a madrasa. He rose to prominence as the Sheikh of Sultan Ahmed I, who commissioned the iconic Blue Mosque, where Aziz Mahmud Hudayi conducted the inaugural Friday prayer. His influence extended to Sultan Murad III, earning him widespread respect.
As a descendant of Junayd of Baghdad and Husayn ibn ‘Ali, Aziz Mahmud Hudayi hailed from esteemed lineage, bearing the title of sayyid. He founded the Jelveti order of Sufis and held the position of qadi (Islamic judge) in various regions including Edirne, Egypt, Sham (Syria), and Bursa. He was a devoted disciple and successor of Üftade Hazretleri of Bursa, leaving behind a notable literary legacy with around thirty works, seven of which were in Turkish. Mustafa Gaibi, a renowned Sufi from Ottoman Bosnia, counted himself among Aziz Mahmud Hudayi’s followers.
Upon his passing in Üsküdar, Istanbul, Aziz Mahmud Hudayi was interred in a mosque complex that has since become a site of pilgrimage and reverence. Although the complex fell into disrepair by 1855, Sultan Abdülmecid I oversaw its restoration and expansion.
Aziz Mahmud Hudayi’s humble abode, located a few miles from the complex, is depicted in a watercolor by Üsküdar-born artist Hoca Ali Riza, situated amidst the countryside of its time.
